Amsterdam trip report

Just back from a week in Amsterdam. Very friendly city and so I thought I would repay their hospitality with some recommendations.

Best dining experience on the fancy end of the scale. Cafe Roux in The Grand Hotel (Oudezijds Voorbururgwal 197) is such a great night out. It is the restaurant attached to the hotel, but don't let yourself be put off by that. It has a daily changing set menu which has three choices for each course and an al la carte if they don't take your fancy. Everything I ate over three visits was tasty and cooked just so. Seemed to cater well for vegetarians and a highlight for me was the duck consomme with quails egg (from the specials menu).
But the usp of the place for me is the sommelier selections option to accompany your meal. Everytime I had it they suprised me and were generous with their pouring hand. And the absolute MUST is the cheese selection, you make your choices from the trolley and then they provide a different sweetie to go with each - MARVELLOUS! The wine with every course and all your cheeses comes in at 27.50 Euros, a bargain.

Le Pecheur on Reguliersdwarsstraat 32. A great fish restaurant. Tasty consomme with really great salt pastry crust followed by monkfish with mushrooms. A busy place on a wet Monday evening in September so you should probably book. The staff were extremely friendly and (unlike so many places) realsied that after my monkfish I needed a good rest before attempting anything else. You should go.
