American Grill(e?) on Staten Island

Edie Sachs | Jul 18, 2001 06:20 PM

I'm always pleased to see Staten Island-related posts on this board, even if they refer to the inevitable Italian/pizza category. I went to a great place last night: American Grill (Grille?) on Forest Avenue. Not sure of cross street but it's near Bard Avenue. Had the best roast half chicken I've had in a long, long time. Also great lobster bisque, fried oysters and grilled salmon. Other items I noted on the American-style menu were steak, pork loin, clams, and French onion soup. Everything we tried was terrific and the prices are certainly a lot more reasonable than Manhattan or Brooklyn!

Service was a bit slow but very polite and quite acceptable. The staff obviously takes pride in their place and what they do. I got there by taking the S48 bus from the ferry terminal in St. George. When and if American Grill(e) gets "discovered" I will be very unhappy, but until then, I've got another place to take visitors to show them that there's more to this borough than Goodfella's pizza.
