Ameri-Mexican in Los Feliz/Silverlake

Usually when I want Mexican, I head for Alegria. Or, if it's a quick burrito or something, Yucca. But tonite, for some reason I'm craving that sort of sleazy Americanized Mexican food I grew up on - you know, super cheesy enchiladas, cheesy beans, everything all gloopy and messy, decent margeritas... that kind of stuff. I've never been to either El Chavo or El Conquistador, but from reading old posts, these seem like my choices. (I have a long-standing bias against Mexico City, and my boyfriend's bias is even stronger, so that place is out.)

Which do you recommend more - El Chavo or El Conquistador? Or, should we stay away from both places and go somewhere else altogether, or just go to Alegria? And, any particularly good things? (I read that the green corn tamales at El Chavo are good, and that the fajitas at El Conquistador are good... anything else we should know?)
