A new Indian sweet shop, Ambala Sweets, recently opened at 2741 W. Devon. Apparently it's a British company looking to go worldwide, and Chicago is the first U.S. store. The space is lovely - a long, mirrored room with a massive, curved granite bar filled with beautifully-arranged sweets and savories. They have a dozen or more varieties of barfi (don't let the English cognate drive you away!). Barfi is like a creamy almond-based fudge, and the three (four?) types I tried at Ambala were all excellent - rich to the point of impossibility. They have everything else too - the round dough balls in syrup, a variety of halwas, and the orange-colored sugar syrup sweets that sort of pop open in your mouth, and many others. Also available were several fresh-made pastries, fried savory snacks, snack mixes, and pre-bottled pickles.
The staff was happy to provide a sample of anything I showed the slightest interest in, and everything gets boxed up in a pretty purple and gold Ambala box. They also have a freezer with frozen pre-packaged desserts to serve at home.
Wow - I will definitely be back.
