Took about 30 people to Ama Lur last night, we had just about everything. Steaks seemed to fare much better than seafood.
We started with big appetizer platters. The pork empanadas, calamari and crab cakes were great hits. The seared ahi tuna with sugar cane was a miss, very bland, large chunks a bit over cooked on the outside. The crusted shrimp were just OK, the crust being a bit mushy and not adding a lot to flavor. The margaritas were well received as well.
Salads with raspberries and pecans disappeared quickly, as did the tortilla soup.
I had the hangar steak opting to substitute the grits and tamale for my sides. The Chihuahua grits were out of this world, and the steak had a thick flavorful sweet-spice exterior and was perfectly done. The sweet potato tamale was dry and not that good.
Those who got crab with their steaks were presented with mixing-bowl sides of crab that were huge and flavorful.
Service was good for the most part, early on had to chase them a bit, but they picked up and we ended up having a great time. If you've got an expense account or a bonus burning a hole in your product this is a good place.
