aluminum chef competition

messycook | May 25, 200409:20 AM     4

My significant other is getting together with 3 of his friends this upcoming weekend. They do this every year & take turns planning competitive events - so he has thought of doing something similar to the 'Iron Chef'.... I get to be the grocery shopper and then the 'judge' when they are done, so my questions are:

-should I just shop the way I normally do (look at what's on sale and what goes together) or think of all kinds of possible concoctions from a bunch of different ingredients and make sure I get them?
-These four guys have a range of ability in the kitchen. How do I accomodate? They will need to make an appetizer and dinner (2 on a team). I want to make it interesting enough to be a bit of a challenge, but not so hard that they pull out the groceries and go, "huh?"

What am I not thinking of? Thanks in advance!
