Almaty, Kazakhstan - Very authentic Punjabi cuisine at The Shakespeare Pub

klyeoh | Dec 2, 201408:20 PM

Dinner at The Shakespeare Pub this evening: at first glance, an exact reproduction of an English pub, down to the dart-board at one corner. But we were brought here by local colleagues who attested that it serves the best *Indian* food in Almaty.

What we had:
- Onion pakoras: mildly-spiced and crisp-fried, served with a mint chutney dip. These are nice, not the best I'd tasted but then, we *are* in Almaty, not the Indian sub-continent.

- Coconut prawn curry: I liked this dish which used perhaps the freshest prawns I'd tasted thus far in Almaty. The flavours were well-balanced and spicy, no concession to local tastes.

- Chicken biryani - Shakespeare's special: another well-executed dish, with the requisite spices and aromatics. We picked out pods of green cardamom, one of the indispensable spices used to cook biryani. Yoghurt was provided on the side as an accompaniment.

- Chicken Karahi: very well-spiced and tasty. I find the boneless chicken meat to be extremely tender, almost fish-like, and wondered why that's the case. Other than that, no complaints.

The Shakespeare Pub is Pakistani-owned and -run, and seemed to be the de facto meeting place for South Asians in Almaty, which perhaps account for the authenticity of the Punjabi-inflected dishes coming out of its kitchen, helmed by an Indian chef. English pub food is also offered (e.g. bangers-and-mash, Shepherd's pie), but we didn't try those.

The place serves Guinness on the tap, and we understood from the owner that it's imported from the UK, not Russian-brewed.
