Alcove and Dusty (short reviews)

kevin | Jun 7, 2005 12:58 AM

went to the alcove tried one of their layer cake desserts, it was vanilla buttercream w/ chocolate cake layer and chocolate fudge between the layers of cake. not good at all, way too sweet, i took about three bites and pushed it away. it was like a bad version of a supermarket cake or a child's bday cake. maybe i should have gone with the coconute cake or the macadama nut cake. but on the upside i've tried the cappuchino here before and that was pretty good, but alas i haven't tried any of their sandwiches which may be good.

went to dusty's and had the crab cakes salad.
with a coconut emulsion sauce. the crab cakes were good though it was a small portion. the rest of the menu looks good and interesting poutine (fries w/ gravy and mozzarella curds by way of canada i presume), lamb sandwiches, lamb burgers w/ tzatiki sauce, crab burgers, lobster raviolis w/ saffron cream sauce (that sounds really good) and an onglet steak with fries, and moules frites and of course bfast stuff like omlettes and crepes. and a salad with duck breast in it. not bad for a bfast lunch joint. oh, for dessert i had a classic french choc mousee. grand stuff.
