After seeing a favorable review for Al Gusto in the Tampa Tribune a while ago, I put it down as "try" when I was in the area. Went about two weeks ago and found it one of the most appealing Mexican restaurants I've enjoyed in the Bay Area. A very, spruced-up storefront at 912 West Kennedy Blvd - down a few blocks from Mise en Place in a coming-back area of Kennedy Blvd. Two dining rooms, nicely appointed with wood finished tables and chairs, bright lighting, open kitchen and a lively and attentive staff. Yes, but what about the food? Chips to start with a choice of salsa per your taste - together with a wide range of Mexican fare - enchiladas, tacos, fajitas, burrito , chile relleno - more ambitious dishes with mole, chimichanga, flautas. Most all entrees are price from 6.50 to 7.95 and come with chips and salsa. I enjoyed the salpicon - new to me and the menu - a seared beef with onions, tomatoes, avocado and spice - I didn't realize, however, it was served cold. After that initial shock, I settled down and enjoyed - think of a beef ceviche without the vinegar. Beer, wine, and traditional desserts, too. Open Monday to Saturday - 813/250-3500. Enjoy.
