I walked by Cafe New Honolulu, the venerable Chinatown "sai chan" (originally known as South Hollywood Cafe) at 888 Stockton St. today and it was dark. The "Closed" sign was up and the window that is always full of pastries was empty. Based on Fictitious Business Statement filings it appears to have changed hands in February, possibly within the same family (surnamed Li).
It's known for its cheap and serviceable, if not great, Hong Kong style Chinese and Western food and is generally busy, often with Chinatown locals and families. I've been fond of the gai pies, sometimes grabbing a couple before jumping on the 45 Bus (which stops immediately in front).
Whatever they are doing, I hope they're not fixing what ain't broke.
