This adventure took me to the blink-and-you'll-miss-it Viet Square restaurant, just across Annandale Road from the Happy Family (of rodents and vermin, apparently) in Falls Church.
It's a little place, in another of those possibly jinxed locations, run by a couple of young women.
I wanted to try one of my favorite salads, beef jerky and papaya, but they don't offer it anymore. Not enough people were ordering it. :<( The server suggested the "Shrimp, Pork, and Lotus Root Salad" instead. Having never tried lotus root, that sounded perfect for a chowhounding adventure.
Lotus root will appeal to those who like things like hearts of palm, jicama, bamboo shoots, etc. The salad was a good portion of shrimp, very thinly sliced pork (I'll take their word for it), and lotus root. Dump on the bowl of vinegar/carrot sauce that you get with most dishes at Vietnamese restaurants and you're good to go.
I also tried a bowl of noodles and crispy spring rolls -- basically soup without the broth. It also included the usual crispy vegetables and another bowl of the sauce, which of course just got dumped into the bowl.
Overall, good solid Vietnamese. Nothing to blow you away, but decent enough if you're in the neighborhood.
