I'm going to be in Austin in mid-October for a conference, and am dragging my husband with me for the weekend beforehand so we can get to know Austin (our first time there).
My idea of vacation is eating, so I am in the process of making a shortlist of and researching where to eat. We will be visiting from the NYC Tristate-area, and while price point is not really an issue for us, we want to avoid anywhere that's too formal or pretentious (if such places exist in Austin, that is!).
I'm looking for eye-widening "mmmmm!" food. I don't drink alcohol, so places with excellent cocktails but only "good" food would be a pass for me.
Can I ask you local Austin chowhounds for some feedback on my shortlist so far, and ask if I've totally missed any other restaurants that you think might interest me?
So far, the following places are on my "Definitely" list:
* la Barbecue (planning on lining up at 10am on a Sunday)
* Barley Swine (tasting menu here we come!)
* Odd Duck
And here's my "Maybe" list (which I'm hoping to expand, before narrowing down further).
* Salty Sow
* Chez Nous
* Counter 357
* Unit-D Pizzeria
Many thanks in advance! I'll be sure to post a trip report after the fact!
