Last night my husband and I splurged on our first dinner at Babbo. We followed most of the recommendations on the board (mint love letters, beef cheek ravioli, octopus salad) and made a couple of nice discoveries of our own including the pig's foot milanese (tasted like breaded and fried bacon, yum) and the peas with amazingly salty, chewy hunks of pancetta.
When it came time for dessert, the server informed us of a dessert special. Fresh strawberries and strawberry gelatto with black pepper and topped with 15 yr old aged balsamic vinegar. He informed us it would be $21. My husband thought -- what the hell. You only live once, right?
Well, I have to say, after all the buildup of a $21 dessert, the result was fairly disappointing. Three scoops of strawberry gelato (admittedly very good, but no black pepper bite to be found), a scattering of chopped strawberries, and then 3 tiny dots of aged balsamic. The balsamic was delicious, but so scarce as to be downright frustrating. A sad end to a good (but honestly, not amazing) meal.
