We just got home from another lovely visit on St. Lucia. Another week of hanging around, eating far too much! Just going to hit the highlights here...
We were disappointed on arrival to find our favorite local restaurant (Laurel's on Trouya Road) was closed for vacation. She opens again on 10/15 or so. Based on reports from Trip Advisor, we asked the resort staff about a couple new-to-us local places. Both were endorsed with enthusiasm - so we tried:
Flavours of the Grill, Gros Islet - I was a little concerned, as it didn't seem like a great neighborhood, but the owners/staff welcomed into this tiny Lucian cottage and we soon felt very comfortable. They have what appears to be a well stocked bar in the front room, and tables along the porch at the front and side of the house. i believe there were also tables in the back yard. Soup of the day was pumpkin (Hooray!) which was light, very broth-like, but tasting of pumpkin and just a little butter. My entree was the grilled pork chop with ginger barbecue sauce. The chop was quite big, the sauce was delicious, as was the sweet potato mash side. DH had the grilled coconut curry lambi (conch), which came with rice and veggies. He really enjoyed the lambi, i tried some of his veggies dipped in the coconut curry sauce. it was very flavorful with just a hint of heat. We were too full to try their desserts, in fact we took leftovers home for lunch the next day. The chef came out and checked with us twice to see that we enjoyed our meal. The price was very reasonable - I believe about $60 US before tip.
Pink Plantation House - Mon Fortune, Castries - what a treasure! We went for lunch on Friday, and were glad we had a cab because we would not have found this place, tucked back in the trees. Pink Plantation house is a 170 year old 3 story plantation house, that has NOT been modernized in any way. It is so rustic and lovely. you enter through a tiny front parlor, and the hostess escorts you to the wide veranda. Our table had an INCREDIBLE view of Castries, and since it was a clear day, Martinique. We started with the juice of the day, lime squash. It was just sweet enough, very refreshing. For appetizers, I had pumpkin soup - some of the best I've had. DH had tamarind glazed shrimp skewer, which he loved. For our main we both ordered the red snapper, creole style, which was the catch of the day. the fish was perfectly cooked, with a tomato, caper creole sauce that perfectly enhanced the flavor of the fish. Each plate had a side of rice. Other sides, delivered in 4 little dishes were a christophine gratin, lentils, buttery carrots and okra, breadfruit balls and fried plantains. My only complaint was that I had to share the last breadfruit ball with DH, LOL. We shared a piece of chocolate cheesecake for dessert, then wandered the house and grounds until our taxi returned for us. The place is owned by artist Michelle Ellis, and she has her painted pottery and prints on display and for sale. Service was gracious, Ms Ellis herself checked with us to see if we enjoyed our meal. Something to note - PPH is open for lunch Sun-Fri, Dinner on Friday, CLOSED on Saturdays. take the time to search this place out, it is worth the drive.
We also had an incredible dinner at Dragonfly at Windjammer Landing, which is where we stay. the Soup of the day was a lobster chowder - which I expected to be a chunky creamy... chowder. I would have termed this more of a bisque, I believe it was seasoned with red curry, and it was smooth. it was really delicious, very lobster-y, just not what I'd call a chowder. For my main, I had the beef short ribs, with island mash and the usual broccoli, carrots and christophine. (man, did I get tired of broccoli, carrots and christophine!!) Anyway, the short ribs were incredible, with a tomato red wine sauce that I could have eaten on anything. DH had the Dorado with plantain and bacon. He thoroughly enjoyed his dinner, the dorado was beautifully cooked and the combination with the bacon and plantain was creative and delicious. Presentation was so beautiful we took pictures, which we NEVER do! :) For dessert I had caramelized bananas with vanilla ice cream, he had a banana crumble with banana ice cream. both perfectly sized and very delicious.
