2 cents on Dr. Hogly Wogly's--long

After so many rave reviews on Chowhound I finally bit the bullet and headed to Dr. Hogly Wogly's Tyler Texas BBQ in Van Nuys (8136 Sepulveda). I grew up in the South and love all types of barbecue. Nothing prepared me for this. I'd heard great things about the brisket but for $13.95 for 1/2 lb and only BBQ sauce as a side I decided to get the sliced beef sandwich with a side of cole slaw and an iced tea. The tea (served in amber colored plastic tumblers) barely had any 'tea' flavor. More like colored water. The sandwich arrived with a sizable portion of chewy beef and sides of mild and 'hot' sauce. The mild sauce tasted overwhelmingly of cinnamon and the hot sauce wasn't that hot. The cole slaw had raisins and tasted as though it had set around for several days. My SO had the sliced pork sandwich and tried to hand it over to me half-way through as a trade, but after one bite found that it was even worse than the beef. I trudged through but wasn't happy. Two sandwiches (with cole slaw) and two iced teas came to $20.03. I was much happier with the gut busting meal I'd recently gotten at My Brothers BBQ on Ventura. If I do try it again what should I get? 1/2 lb of brisket- could it really be worth $14 when I could get a larger brisket and cook it myself at home?
