This Little Italy spot was the original location of Umbertos Clam House back in 1972. After being open for only a few months, a major mob hit was taken out in the restaurant. “Crazy” Joe Gallo of the Colombo family was enjoying his 43rd birthday celebrations when gun fire opened. He was shot multiple times and staggered out to the street before he died. Today, there’s another Umbertos Clam House at 132 Mulberry Street, but don’t be fooled: This isn’t the place where the action happened.
