The first recipe for German Chocolate Cake in its now-classic form (three layers of chocolate buttermilk cake filled and topped with a gooey coconut-pecan frosting) appeared in The Dallas Morning News on June 3, 1957, courtesy of Mrs. George Clay. It was actually called German's Sweet Chocolate Cake, since it featured that particular ingredient, but as the recipe grew in popularity, the title became shortened to what we call it today.
