First Lady Nancy Reagan samples the White House kitchen staff’s baked goods. On the left in the photo is Executive Pastry Chef Roland Mesnier. President Reagan was smitten with chocolate, but the former First Lady directed the chef to rarely prepare anything with chocolate, because she wanted to keep the president trim and healthy. But, Mesnier has been quoted as saying that when Nancy Reagan was away, he would prepare a huge bowl of chocolate mousse for the president. And, of course, jelly beans were President Reagan’s favorite go-to snack, and he kept a jar on his desk.
