Lard-lovers can rejoice. "Anti-trans fat hysteria has finally swung the pastry pendulum back into the pro-flavor camp," reports daveena, who recently discovered that the Safeway-brand premade pie crusts she purchased at the grocery store's Alameda South Shore location contained no trans fat. But that's because the fat used to prepare the crusts was 100 percent lard.
That's great news if you're a pork enthusiast, but perhaps you should start reading the fine print on pastry packaging if you don't eat lard for dietary or religious reasons. susancinsf counted herself lucky for having read daveena's post before she and her non-pork-eating daughter got ready to make holiday pies—the Raley's branded crusts she had bought were made with lard, too.
