Chowish choices in Bayside, Queens, have been multiplying in recent years, from souvlaki to pho to bulgogi. So who’s ready for dessert? ZenFoodist, for one, and she says three-month-old Teaspoon Bake Shop satisfies her cravings with its luscious cake balls, among other sweet things. Flavors include chocolate, banana, and red velvet. “All are moist and decadent,” she promises.
Also crave-worthy: scones, gluten-free coconut-lime macaroons, and vanilla cupcakes filled with peanut butter and jelly. And there’s a bonus for java hounds: coffee from Stumptown. With the arrival of Teaspoon, joining places like Avli for Greek and Mekong East for Vietnamese, derkoch forecasts good things for the neighborhood: “The food desert that is Bayside seems to be getting some much-needed rain.”
A few blocks downstream on Bell Boulevard is Cupcakes in Heels, opened just last month. Its signature treats are “not Crumbs-like monstrosities but rather, medium-sized,” ZenFoodist reports, “and all have frosting piped into them so you get some with every bite.” As the shop’s name might suggest, there’s a fashion motif going on here. The cupcakes are named after famous designers: Chanel (vanilla), Dior (banana), Versace (tiramisu), and the like. Thursday is Ladies’ Night: a free cupcake with any purchase for every customer who arrives from 8 to 11 p.m. decked out in big-name couture. ZenFoodist’s cupcake of choice is the Prada, flavored with pistachio (no devil’s food, curiously). “Very tender with a pale green frosting that, in a good way, reminds me of the instant pistachio pudding that I loved as a child,” she sighs.
