Pan’s problem with desserts made of sour ingredients like citrus or passion fruit is that they’re rarely sour enough. When sugar swamps natural fruit tartness, he wonders, “what’s the point?” LaSalle, an ice cream shop in Murray Hill, gets it. Its passion fruit gelato is surprisingly, bracingly sour, Pan reports.
Over on Seventh Avenue, L’Arte del Gelato unleashes full-throttle passion fruit in a sorbetto. vvvindaloo loves this “tangy icy tart stuff” even more than L’Arte’s excellent creamy gelati. Gramercy Tavern goes more tropical, combining passion fruit and coconut sorbets with coconut tapioca that’s “very refreshing,” kobetobiko writes.
Other delicious tart-sweet sorbets can be had at Lupa (grapefruit), Ciao Bella (lemon, grapefruit, blood orange), Craft (grapefruit, Meyer lemon), and Il Laboratorio del Gelato (numerous seasonal flavors, many of them combining citrus with herbs).
Passion fruit plays a background role in hound-endorsed desserts at Ouest, where it accompanies crème fraîche panna cotta, and Momofuku Bakery & Milk Bar, as a layer of passion fruit curd in the chocolate chip cake (“awesome,” declares jessica).
And for a free fix of sourness, slcorlis shares a sleeper pick: the big electronics store B&H, which sets out bowls of sweets at the sales counters. Look for puckeringly sour passion fruit candies in yellow wrappers.
