Sure signs of early spring: budding trees, $8-a-pound asparagus, baby ducks, and the Washington Post Peeps Diorama Contest. For the third year in a row the paper is challenging readers to fit a pop-culture masterpiece starring the marshmallow creatures inside a shoebox, for a $100 gift card and tons of glory.

Among the 800 entries last year was a stabby, yet somehow still cute, take on Psycho; “Peep Art,” a teeny art gallery with a Peeps Andy Warhol and Edie Sedgwick attending the exhibition; and a charming re-creation of the “inappropriate” airport bathroom incident starring Senator Larry Craig.

Check out the 2008 photo gallery on the Post’s site. Entrants have until March 15 to send in photos of their 2009 Peeps creations; see the entry guidelines for more information.

[The diorama contest tradition lasted 10 years, but was ended in 2017. Still, you can make edible art with Peeps desserts at home!]
