When the desire for real, honest soul food strikes, the hounds agree: It’s Mrs. Jones in Dorchester for the win. Chef-owner Mrs. Jones is from Mobile, Alabama, and does an old-school menu: luscious barbecued chicken that comes by the half or whole bird, smothered pork chops (a board favorite), and fried chicken. Note that Mrs. Jones, for some reason, generally only fries up chicken wings, which MichaelB calls “very large and meaty.”
Sides are also special: mac ‘n’ cheese, candied yams, cabbage, and string beans. MichaelB says the cornbread has a “weird chemical taste,” maybe too much baking powder? But other folks like it just fine, particularly loaded with butter and jam.
