Taco-lovers are a hardy lot, and they’ll gladly brave bitter December cold for a taste of authentic al pastor from the Tacos El Bronco truck in Sunset Park. But they’re also not complaining now that the truck has put down roots in a sit-down restaurant complete with ceiling, walls, and heat.

tex.s.toast, who’d all but given up on finding decent al pastor in New York, says El Bronco’s is the real deal: sweet barbecued pork with a healthy char, an intriguing mineral note, and bits of pineapple from the spit. Table salsas are top-notch too, tex adds; tripe, tongue, and other variety meats fall a little short. But guide boy‘s a fan, and he even compares the brick-and-mortar El Bronco favorably with Matamoros, the perpetually packed neighborhood favorite. “Matamoros is good,” he acknowledges, “but when the kitchen is in high-volume mode it seems to get a little sloppy. Not so, not yet, at El Bronco.”
