New Jersey hounds call it Poland on the Passaic. Comprising Garfield, Wood-Ridge, and a few other riverside communities, it’s a kielbasa corridor, rich in purveyors of Polish foodstuffs.

One of the best is Piast in Garfield, truly a “Palace for Pork,” promises fourunder. It houses an outstanding butcher and deli as well as a great prepared-food counter where $6 buys a hearty meal of meat and vegetable with potato.

Not far away is Golden Eagle, weaker on groceries and meat but, to fourunder’s Polish friends, stronger on prepared foods.

After an exhausting session of shopping, fourunder recommends a pleasant, reasonably priced sit-down bite at Royal Warsaw in nearby Elmwood Park. Try the steak tartare.
