It used to be that wearing a T-shirt with a restaurant’s logo was a fashion faux pas. As Zach Brooks notes on Serious Eats, however, restaurant shirts have become the new concert tees. Like a concert T-shirt, a restaurant tee is a way to show you’re in-the-know. Mike D from the Beastie Boys, for example, regularly sports a Chinatown Ice Cream Factory T-shirt. When rock stars are wearing restaurant T-shirts, things have clearly flipped.
Of course, pizza places have been selling T-shirts for a while now—but more gourmet places are getting in on the act, too. Brooks says he owns shirts from Rue de la Course and Cochon, both in New Orleans, and Au Pied de Cochon in Montreal. Chris Cosentino of Incanto designed the sassy “Lips & Assholes” tee; the Spotted Pig is famous for its shirts; and I’ve seen at least one El Bulli tee, although I can’t find them online.
Sadly, there appears to be no French Laundry T-shirt—or even an “I tried to make reservations at the French Laundry and all I got was this T-shirt” T-shirt.
