kare_raisu recently sampled three commonly available varieties of queso fresco at the cheese case of a new supermercado. Of the three, El Mexicano was the worst: kare_raisu considered it “tasteless and pasty.” Cacique queso fresco fared a little better: “Passable but wouldn’t survive in Mexico,” says kare_raisu.

But the Los Altos queso fresco was far and away the winner, thanks to its fresh milk taste and light creaminess. “I started to have a faint rush of pleasure as it reminded me of a recent two weeks in Jalisco,” says kare_raisu. “It’s not Mexican cheese, but I will gladly settle for this here!”
