Joe Sixpack may not have kicked up too much of a fuss when toys, electronics, and, ultimately, jobs were being outsourced to other countries, but now that the King of Beers is about to get snapped up by a Belgian firm, beer fans are fighting mad.
According to an AP article, Belgian brewing company InBev made an offer last week to buy Anheuser-Busch, the largest American brewer. Backlash began immediately, with quickie websites being erected and newspapers taking polls to gauge the depth of readers’ desire to keep the 150-plus-year-old brewery U.S.-owned.
Politicians have even gotten into the act. The AP article notes that both senators from Missouri, Republican Kit Bond and Democrat Claire McCaskill, have spoken out against the deal, with Bond going so far as to ask Attorney General Michael Mukasey to look into possible antitrust aspects of the sale (despite, the article points out, his pro-free-trade voting record).
