If you’ve been to Boston, you’ve probably been to Legal’s. Legal Sea Foods, home to some of the best (and surely the most consistent) clam chowdah on the East Coast, and a damn fine place for a de rigueur steamed lobster, is blazing a path for fussy diners on the go. It’s introducing self-checkout for customers with credit cards. Hand-held devices have been installed at all 34 of Legal’s locations to allow customers to pay at their tables.
The restaurant has cited concerns over credit card protection as the reason for the switch (tableside payment kiosks cut out the middleman, and thus much of the vulnerability associated with giving your card to a stranger). But this humble scribe thinks that eliminating the sometimes excruciating wait between the food running out and settling up will be a welcome change—at least at a restaurant as down-to-bizness as Legal’s.
