Los Angeles is home to the largest Thai population outside of the motherland, so it’s not surprising that the city—especially in Thai Town—has a lion’s share of the authentic and the tasty. From boat noodles to khao soi to Chinese-influenced drunkard’s noodles, it’s all here. Here’s an alphabetical list of Thai kitchens talked up on Chowhound in recent months.
1. CRISPY PORK GANG & GRILL
5253 Hollywood Boulevard, Los Angeles
Naturally, crispy pork is the thing to get here, and you can have it in just about any Thai dish you can think of. But try it in prik king, pad ka prow, fried rice, fried papaya salad, or with preserved egg.
2. JITLADA RESTAURANT
5233 W. Sunset Boulveard, Los Angeles
The menu’s practically an encyclopedia of Thai cooking, and most of the dishes are packed with enough heat to make you sweat. For extreme heat, look to the Southern Thai section of the menu. Otherwise, go for green mussels steamed with lemongrass and basil, crispy catfish salad, and soft-shelled crab with curry.
3. NIGHT + MARKET
9041 Sunset Boulevard, West Hollywood
This permanent pop-up inside a formal Thai restaurant is all about street food. On the pork-heavy menu, the pig tails are an absolute must.
4. THE ORIGINAL HOY KA HOLLYWOOD
5401 Hollywood Boulevard, Los Angeles
Hoy Ka is known for great soups, but it’s the duck noodles that get the most applause from Chowhounds. They feature killer chunks of meat, broth that’s a little on the sweet side, and a hefty helping of fried garlic.
5. PA ORD NOODLE
5301 Sunset Boulevard, Suite 8, Los Angeles
The extremely spicy, very popular Thai boat noodles are funky, chock-full of offal that swims in broth thickened with pork blood. If innards ain’t your thing, the tom yum noodles are just as good and every bit as authentic.
6. PAILIN THAI CUISINE
5621 Hollywood Boulevard, Los Angeles
The khao soi is great at this restaurant devoted to Northern Thai cuisine, but you can’t go wrong with anything from the specials menu. Ask for translation assistance.
7. RUEN PAIR RESTAURANT
5257 Hollywood Boulevard, Los Angeles
Standout dishes include papaya salad, plus either the salty black crab or raw crab and the sautéed morning glory, water spinach cooked in soybean sauce.
8. SANAMLUANG CAFE
5176 Hollywood Boulevard, Los Angeles
Loaded with pork offal, ground pork, fish balls and cake, shrimp, bean sprouts, and fried wontons, Sanamluang’s noodle soup is the Chowhound favorite. The pad kee mow, or drunkard’s noodles, is a close second.
9. SAPP COFFEE SHOP
5183 Hollywood Boulevard, Los Angeles
Angelenos trek very far for the sweet-sour boat noodles (pictured—some say they’re LA’s best, by far). But Chowhounds also rave about Sapp’s crispy pork with basil over rice.
10. SRI SIAM CAFE
12843 Vanowen Street, North Hollywood
Hounds are willing to venture beyond Thai Town for the crispy rice salad, a mix of Thai sour sausage, roasted peanuts, ginger, green onion, and deliciously crunchy rice. The Northern and Southern Thai curries are also destination dishes in their own right.
