FoodLab, a new commercial cooking space in the Mid-Market area, is hosting a series of rotating pop-ups, including Sol Food, a Puerto Rican restaurant with a brick-and-mortar space in San Rafael.

Malcolm Ruthven admits to not being an expert on Puerto Rican food, but he’s visited the San Rafael shop many times and recommends the pollo al horno, baked herb-marinated chicken thighs served with rice and beans.

vulber stopped into the FoodLab pop-up and liked the pollo al horno and coconut pudding, but dismissed the iced espresso (“like a watery Vietnamese coffee”). Overall the experience was good, but didn’t live up to the hype from fans of the San Rafael restaurant.

“It seems to have a bit of a cult following, which I don’t get,” vulber concludes.
