A simple side of sautéed chard is everyday fare, but the leafy green also lends earthy flavor to more indulgent preparations.

Adding chard to pasta was a new experience for always_eating, who calls these Swiss chard gnocchi “quite delicious!” Finely chopped, sautéed chard makes a nice addition to homemade cheese ravioli, says Den. Or try CHOW’s Swiss Chard Stuffed Shells (pictured).

Chowhounds also enjoy chard in creamy baked dishes. This chard and Gruyère panade (bread casserole), from The Zuni Cafe Cookbook, is “the richest, most delicious concoction ever,” says danna. Alice Waters’s chard gratin is “[l]ike creamed spinach, but a little bolder,” according to gilintx, while toveggiegirl calls this Gouda-and-Edam-laden mac ‘n’ cheese “the perfect ‘gateway’ recipe for chard haters.”

A couple of hounds recommend Rick Bayless’s tacos with chard, queso fresco, and tomatillo salsa. They’re delicious, says dexters, who adds that her “carnivore” husband “doesn’t miss the meat.”
