Regional Indian cuisine hits the spot lately, or so it seems from active discussions on that topic. Two recent threads discuss South Bay restaurants that specialize in Chettinad cuisine, which hails from Tamil Nadu and is famous for its kick of spice and pungency. mdg feasted at Aachi Aappakadai in Santa Clara, where the nethili meen fry, a dish of fried anchovies, was an excellent start, but the ennai kathirikai (an eggplant special) stole the show. mdg also tried the aappam, a grain crêpe with crispy sides and a soft center, which was “interesting and tasty.”
vulber revived a 2011 thread about Anjappar Chettinad, a restaurant in Milpitas. Both vulber and chefj agreed that the service can be slow and occasionally forgetful, but the wait is worth it since “the flavors were far better” than at typical Indian restaurants in the area, says vulber.
