Dip for potato chips may not be haute cuisine, but it can be Chowhound-worthy, whether consumed festively with friends or furtively alone. magiesmom‘s favorite dip is quite simple: ricotta, plus any spices you like. ipsedixit loves the slightly more exotic combination of chocolate syrup and Sriracha.

GH1618 favors homemade smoked oyster dip: Mix canned smoked oysters (with the oil drained off) into cream cheese thinned with half-and-half, and add minced white onion and Worcestershire sauce. sueatmo likes homemade hummus: Canned or home-cooked chickpeas will work, blended in a food processor with garlic, tahini, and lemon juice. “I add chicken broth to mine, instead of olive oil,” says sueatmo.

And laliz makes a serious dip of fried sausage covered with sour cream, salsa, and cheese that slowly melts and browns over the top. “Trust me, your friends will be asking for the recipe,” laliz says.
