Boston is well known for its St. Patrick’s Day revelry, and many residents celebrate the holiday by eating corned beef and cabbage, a classic Irish combo. Boston hounds have several great suggestions for where to try this famous dish while avoiding the wild crowds.
Small Plates loves St. Patrick’s Day and goes out for the occasion every year: The Plough & Stars near Central Square, The Druid in Inman Square (the environment is “raucously chill”), and The Burren in Davis Square. All have live music during St. Patty’s Day lunch. Get there early, though, or seats may be scarce. And as LeoLioness points out, there may not be any “off-hours” when St. Patrick’s Day falls on a Saturday.
emannths thinks that Olde Magoun’s Saloon in Somerville is another great option for corned beef and cabbage, and in Boston proper, Mike5966 likes the version at The Gallows in the South End. “It was tender, had the right red beefy color, juicy, fatty, with the right amount of salt,” Mike5966 says.
Despite these suggestions, other hounds think homemade corned beef and cabbage for the holiday is the only way to go. Bob Dobalina agrees. “There’s a very good reason that March 17 is also Evacuation Day in Boston,” he says.
