Where's the best D.C. coffee?
We'll be in the D.C. area the 14th through 22nd, and I'd like to find a good, fair trade cuppa joe. Suggestions? Thanks!

Juan Valdez Dirección: 1889 F. STREET, N.W. Its a Colombian chain, They only have 1 in DC, on this location. I think they're opening another one soon in the Penn Quarter, if they havent already. Try it, i'm addicted

Murky Coffee on 7th SE, right off of Penn. They care deeply about their coffee. Modern Times Coffeehouse, which is located in on the ground floor of Politics & Prose (Connecticut Ave NW, I forget the address) also has good coffee. They also have the best cafe food around.

The owner at Java Green is another guy who is fanatic about only buying the perfect bean and preparing a perfect coffee drink. I love that my espresso comes w/ a cup and saucer (and free cookie) all for much less than what the chains charge. Of
course none of that would matter if it wasn't the best tasting cup in town!

I second Java Green.

Java House, at 1645 Q St NW, roasts their own beans.
Ben's Espresso, a cart on 24th and N on weekday mornings, has wonderful coffee.
I don't know if the coffee at either place is fair trade or not, though.

I think that Murky Coffee is pretty bad, but I only get espressos and macchiatos. They do a good job of making their coffees pretty, but a bad job in the taste department. In DC, one of the better places is Swings near the Whitehouse. I went to the Juan Valdez store a year ago and found it blah. In the DC Area, I think that Misha's in Alexandria is the best all around.

Swing's is the only original coffee roaster left in DC. Been around since 1914 or so. Their blue mountain is the best.

Okay, so I'm not losing my mind. The closest decent place to me is a Murky. I usually order either a drip coffee or a double Americano, and neither one EVER tastes fresh. Clarendon is supposed to have a few good places to go, but thus far I've not explored it.

I've become more of a fan of Murky coffee. They have improved their coffee, but it is still a bit rough and grindy. There is supposed to be an Illy coffee shop in DC but I haven't been there yet. Also, Open City and it's sister place in Adams Morgan make pretty good espresso drinks.

Mandarin Oriental serves Illy, and I like it a lot.
Lots of good suggestions in this thread, and I intend to try a few.....

I can't speak to whether it is fair trade, but the coffee at Sparky's on 14th Street is very good.
