Fusion has been happening for thousands of years, but in the modern dining lexicon it takes on such a specific meaning. A meaning which conjures up images very different than this nice little hole in the wall. But in reality what is on offer here is fusion food. The menu is primarily Taiwanese, but the staff all speaks Cantonese (as did all of the customers when I was there). The Cantonese influence even appeared in the flavour of the food.
So I'm declaring this a Taiwanese Cantonese fusion restaurant. There I said it.
There also are a few Shanghainese sounding dishes on the menu, and they do have "Shanghai Food" in the name of the restaurant. While I only sampled the Taiwanese side of the menu, I imagine the Shanghai style items have a strong Cantonese influence as well.
The restaurant itself is quite small, with about 4 tables, and a counter designed for take-out customers (of which there were several during my time there).
I started off the with garlic cucumbers. These were very homestyle with a light marinade, a subtle amount of garlic, and a lighter brighter flavour than typical in the classic Taiwanese preparation. They were very refreshing, and I enjoyed the new style.
The pork chop noodle soup was served with the pork chop and pickles on the side. The broth was a lighter Cantonese style broth without noticeable MSG. It was a flavourful well balanced yet quite gentle broth. The napa cabbage and spinach were lightly cooked and retained a bit of crunch which softened as they continued to cook in the hot broth. They were at the perfect doneness for me, but some might find them slightly undercooked until they let them sit for a while. The noodles were the weakest part of the dish - a rather typical commercial variety.
The side pork chop was a generous serving of two perfectly fried pork chops. They had segmented the chop in a fan pattern to allow more even cooking. The breading was the typical Taiwanese fried breading and was done perfectly. Very nice chops.
There was a side of lightly pickled Taiwanese style pickles served as well, which had some nice fungus mixed in. Again, very light flavours without things being overly pungent.
Service was extremely friendly, and seemed to know the bulk of customers who appeared to be regulars.
So overall a very homestyle feel to this little spot, with friendly service, good quality on the food, and a unique Cantonese influenced Taiwanese style. I'll be back!
