It's a cute tea house in Santa Monica - quite hidden among other buildings. I've probably passed it numerous times, not knowing of the treasures inside!
There's a gift shop before entering the dining area. The shelves are stocked with chocolates from England. I bought so many. Aero, original Mars, fudge, all sorts of Cadbury. The store also offers a variety of tea, cards, condiments and tea sets.
The cases are filled with tarts and other pastries. The freezer holds sticky toffee pudding!
The Tudor House menu has a nice selection of salads, sandwiches, and desserts for a la carte ordering. But everyone at our table chooses the Victorian Tea package - $17.95 for tea, scones, e'clair, three types of sandwiches, a salad, strawberries, and choice of liquor.
I got a mimosa, though the rest of the table ordered Kir Royale. Sweet, and the tea arrived soon after. It was rather hilarious because the waitress had switched our teas around and three of us were left drinking raspberry, green, and orange pekoe and wondering, "why does mine taste like fruit?" when it was supposed to be bolder, or "why does mine look green" when it was supposed to be orange. We finally figured it out.
The food was adorable. First were the salads, which came with english cream (mm!) and grapes. The strawberries were plentiful and finished with a british flag tailing a toothpick.
The sandwiches all came out on tiers. The favorite was definitely the smoked salmon with cream cheese and dill. Delicious! Just the right amount of smoky flavor, with wheat bread. The egg salad was scrumptious, too, although I found the cucumber a bit bland. The raisin scones had too little raisins, and I think the scones overall tasted a bit like biscuits. The clotted cream, however, was quickly demolished.
We (being all women) thought it was really cute when a man entered followed and led by four little girls, one of them being his daughter. How often do you see a father taking out his daughter and her girlfriends out for tea? :-)
