The Toaster Oven - A Brief Report

Not really what SoMa needed, but this toasted sandwich shop just opened up next to Osha Thai on 2nd St.

Menu is very simple and basic. I had two sandwiches (the Italiano and meatball; $4.19 ea) - they're decent enough, but hardly earth-shattering. The sides kinda' border on the expensive side IMHO (examples: $2.49 for an 8 oz. cup of soup; the choc. chip cookie at $.99 is verrry ordinary tasting.) The hand-spun shake ($2.99/16 oz.) was like the sandwich - decent enough; it was actually a nice little treat during this November "heatwave" we've been having.

Maybe the best thing about the sandwiches themselves is the roll - they use a roll by Gonnella, which is based in Chicago and used in several Italian beef places there. It's tasty and toasts up nice and crispy in the oven.

Perhaps this place can drive one of those nearby Quizno's (two branches within shouting distance) out, to be replaced by either a good taqueria or pizza-by-the-slice joint. Ahhh, one can only dream...
