Finally got to Thom Thom, Tom Schaudel's asian fusion sushi-steak place (Park Avenue, Wangtagh L.I. -- next to the LIRR station) last night for dinner.
There were five of us and we all ordered from the prix fixe menu ($24, M-F 5-6:30p). Let me start by saying that it wasn't our intention to go prix fixe, but the breadth of the prix fixe offerings (a whole lot more than just roasted chicken here!) at a price about $10-15 less if those items were ordered a la carte was simply too tempting to pass up.
For starters, we got the kung pow calamari, spicy tuna roll, maryland crab cake, and asian mussels. The calamari were extremely fresh and the portion large enough for an entree. Although it was a big hit at the table, I found the spicy-sweet sauce with peanuts made the calamari a bit too adulterated for my tastes. The tuna roll was also very fresh and also quite large. The mussles were in a Thai-ish sauce and delicious. The crab cake was also quite enjoyable.
For entrees, I got the lapsang soochong tea cured salmon, with carrots, shitake mushrooms, baby asparagus and fresh soy beans in a mirin base. Delicious. My dining companions ordered the pork chop, BBQ hangar steak, and "flatiron steak" -- enjoyed by all.
For dessert came Hong Kong sundaes (coconut ice cream, toasted pineapple, and whipped cream) and fresh fruit sashimi (slices of fresh fruit with two large scoops of rasberry and mango sorbet).
All food was all artfully presented and the service very professional and efficient. The surroundings asian-inspired setting is quite nice, making for an upscale but comfortable atmosphere (upscale casual?).
We were very pleased and I highly recommend this place to all.
