Terrible Thanksgiving dinner at Lou LaBonte's in Auburn

Laziness never pays off. Instead of cooking yesterday we decided to go out to dinner. We picked Lou LaBonte's in Auburn after calling two other restaurants that were going to be closed. Both recommended the buffet at Lou LaBonte's along I-80. We made reservations a week ago. There is no doubt in my mind that ex-cons cooked that meal. It was the worst institutional food ever, worse than nursing homes. Small selection. Cheese plate consisted of cubes of pepper jack and cheddar surrounded with a few almonds. Thin slices of bread heaped in a basket to dry out. 3 ordinary salads, sweet potatoes with marshmallows, stuffing with no sage or seasoning of any kind, potatoes with huge chunks and no seasoning, mucky gravies and turkey dried out and no flavor. There was ham and prime rib, too, but we didn't have it so I don't know what either was like, probably just as bad as the turkey. There was a vat (literally) of horseradish sauce for the prime rib. No presentation skills whatsoever in that meal. Again, the ex-cons thought comes to mind. $19.95 each. Coffee was extra. That meal should have been in the $6.95 range and still it would not have been a bargain. With all of that, however, the hosts and hostesses and waitresses were super nice, very hospitable, cheerful. Those people need to move on to a good restaurant and replace some of the snooty wait staff there. Next year I'll cook.
