Sweet and Juicy Crab at Santa Cruz yacht harbor

Even w/ the misty weather, Y and I decided to take a walk down to the yacht harbor today. We remarked that we haven't gorged on nearly as much fresh Dungeness compared to last season due to the slow start and the recent rain.

We got down there around 2pm, and unfortunately no boats were selling at that time. We wandered down the R, S, and T docks, and some guys on the R dock told us to come back around 3:30pm to find "Scooby" who should be returning from sea.

I sent Y back down around 6pm, and he saw the boat "Gayle", our preferred live crab vendor in the past. Brought back two beauties, each weighing around 2.5 lbs., for a relatively low rate of $3.50/lb. Just caught today.

We did a simple steam, and WOWEE, these were the best-tasting crab we've had all season! Meaty, intensely sweet, and what was really striking...JUICY. Seriously dripping and squirting of crab juice. No dipping sauce necessary, although a little fresh lemon juice was nice.

Y didn't ask too many questions about how much longer the Gayle guy would be fetching crab, but I've heard that crabbing will continue a bit longer this year since it was a slow start and salmon fishing is having its own problems right now. Gayle boat will start salmon fishing in May and will follow the guidelines of 75 salmon per week, which is what he has reportedly caught in a day. Environmental concerns are paramount, but I feel for these guys whose livelihoods are directly threatened...

BTW, Johnny's Harborside looked packed inside from what we could tell. Anyone eaten there recently?
