soft-shell crabs at bernard's - chestnut hill

stopped at bernard's at the chestnut hill mall before doing a little sunday afternoon shopping. this place is a pretty westernized chinese restaurant. however, it think it's the best bet of the 3 restaurants in that mall (the others being pappa razzi and charlie's saloon) and i've always been happy with my meals there.

anyway, they had soft-shell crabs as a special that day and they were awesome! i can't remember the size classifications for crabs (i think, from smallest to largest, it's hotel, *something*, then jumbo?). these were definitely in the jumbo class. two crabs lightly floured, salt & peppered, then pan fried. served with a salad of pickled carrots and daikon and i believe a sprinkle of small-diced jalepenos for a little heat. these were some of the freshest, meatiest, tastiest soft-shells i've ever had. two of us split them as an app, but it could have been a very satisfying entree. they were $21.95, which sounds like a lot, but given the size and freshness of them i thought it was worth it. the service was also excellent, very friendly from beginning to end.

definitely worth checking out....
