A small treasure in Hempstead

The rebirth of Hempstead has also seen the opening of several good Spanish food places. One in particular is Carribean Grill, 50 Fulton Ave. which is a few blocks west of the new Hub shopping center. There are daily lunch specials of any meat with rice and beans for $4.25. I had the mondongo (tripe soup)yesterday - I ordered a cup for takeout, and got a pint, for $2.50! And it was terrific - really fresh and with just a little bite. Cuban sandwiches are good, as are the maduros. The guy who delivered (I think he was the owner) told us he also has a whole roast chicken, with rice and beans, for $7.95 - that will be my take-out dinner for the family one night. I'm not sure of the ethnicity - there is a Dominican flag in the window, but that's true of a lot of places since the crash. All I can say is it's perked up the spirits of my entire office to have a place to eat real food without having to drive someplace else. This location is also not far from Roosevelt Field, if you are hungry and can't face the Food Court.
