SGV Adventures: Pie N Burger in Pasadena

I’ve had bad burger karma recently. First was that disastrous trip to Twoheys. Then, I splurged on the Pug Burger at Hungry Cat, and it was just okay… So when another hound invited me out to dinner after class to my very first trip to the legendary Pie N Burger, I admit, I was nervous….

Although I’ve had plenty of chances to explore the food scene in Pasadena, I’ve never been to Pie N Burger because I never knew it was THERE. There being the intersection of Lake and California. The building is not small, but unassuming. I was actually expecting it to be something like Apple Pan, just a counter. Instead it was much bigger, the counter was there, but so where there several tables.

And being a starved hound, I placed my order… Cheese Burger of course, with fries (well cone) and since I was feeling really devilish, a small bowl of Chili to dip my fries in!

It all came at once. The burger was a good size, nice patty of meat. My hound pal gave me her tomatoes from her Salad (They charge extra for Tomatoes on your burger here!) and I was all set for my first bite.

It was indeed wonderful! A bit messy because they just lay on with their home made Thousand Island dressing. But basically, it was like an In and Out Burger on Steriods…

The fries were of the thick cut variety and just okay. They were crisp enough, but lacked any real potato flavor. It really is amazing to me how you can get pretty much the same type of fries at some place like Langer and they taste amazing, and these were just , meh… (I find the same paradox with In N Outs fries vs. Skoobys!)

My small Chili came out in a dinner bowl! I imaged a cup, what I got was quite a bit (My chowpal told me the LARGE size was like a bucket!!). It was standard bean style chili. No great taste, but not horrible either. But next time I get the idea for Chili Fries, I’ll head to Tommys or the Hat! :)

At the end of the dinner, I was stuffed, so I passed on the wonderful looking home made pies and desserts! And while the sides I selected weren’t that great, the burger did indeed live up the hype and I’ll be back… for another great burger and to finally try that pie! :)
