The Scoop on Frozen Custard

Thanks to the Chowhounds response to my recent post concerning finding a good scoop of Frozen Custard (a Mid-Western and New York treat)I was provided a list of places to try. I went, I ate and here is the scoop. I have found fresh, smooth, great tasting Frozen Custard here in L.A. Frozen Custard is usually smother than Ice Cream and unlike ice cream it does not sock you in the stomach twenty minutes after eating it. It also does not seem to melt (drip down the side of the cone) as fast as ice cream. The rule is if it does not have EGG YOKE in it is NOT frozen custard. My standard for Frozen Custard is “Custard Corner” – A very popular stand in Buffalo N.Y. I no longer have to wait till I fly East to enjoy a frozen treat that compares very well. Two really GREAT places have frozen Custard in L.A. – Taste Chicago and Silky Smooth Ultra Premium Ice Cream .

Taste Chicago has a smooth and rich vanilla Frozen Custard. It is not soft-serve but is made fresh on site. If you are there when it is being churned it will be soft. Nevertheless, it is not frozen “hard.” A “Must Try.” Also, other great Chicago style chow on the menu.

Silky Smooth Ultra Premium Ice Cream A frozen treat that they say is a, “fusion of artisan gelato, fresh frozen custard and homemade ice cream!” So I guess it is not a true “Frozen Custard” by it self as it is blended (“fused”) with other treats but the result is very good. I happen to be there as it was coming out of the machine and what I had was a soft-serve that was very smooth (OK, “Silky) and rich. Another “Must Try.”

Lickity Split. This is good. But what I had was frozen hard like ice cream. I was told that you can get it when it is being churned on site and it will be like soft-serve. If you are close by, give it a try.

Strickland's Ice Cream makes a very good and very smooth ice cream – NOT Custard.. I think the reason it is so smooth it is made in a machine that was designed to make frozen custard. If you like ice cream you should like Strickland’s. I got a sock to the belly but maybe I ate more than I should have. Good.
