O'Fado; again..

My parents lured me to Peabody yesterday, with the carrot of dinner at O'Fado, mentionedhere many times....Alarmed at rumors of it's impending demise, we were there for the rest of the story..The deal is, the owners have been trying to get a divorce for 3 or 4 years, and they're gonnah have to sell to do it...Anyone in the market for an authentic Portuguese restaurant? ;)

I always order the octopus. It's always great, pieces cooked in a broth of wine, olive oil, peppers, onions, garlic; the basics..But last night, there was an octo special; don't know what the deal was with this, they've never had specials before...."Pulpo Gisado", stewed octopus with potatoes...Sounded pretty prosaic, but hell, it WAS octopus...

The resulting platters contained a half of a huge cephalopod, surrounded 4 or 5 potatoes...Looked pretty prosaic, too...But as our knives slid thru the meat, with a mere hint of firmness, we knew we were onto something big...Someone had been touched by the Octopus Gods; this stuff was PERFECTLY cooked, retaining the juicyness of the bath of wine, EVOO and hot peppers it must have stewed in for hours...I'm gonnah go on record with this.....

IT WAS THE BEST OCTOPUS I HAVE EVER TASTED!!

I'm not kidding; better than Lisbon, better than any Greek style, better than the grilled app. at Bonfire, better than the stew at O' Cantinho..This was it...Every bite melted in our mouths, full of the tender meaty, taste of a perfectly braised and stewed piece of protein; just enough red wine to tenderize, just enough EVOO to moisten, just a tiny bite of a chili aftertaste. And the potatoes retained their texture, soaking the broth into their outer 1/4"....

Very bite was perfect. Every bite, my mother and I kept looking at each other and saying, "This is SOOOOO good!" Galleygirl and Galleymom both sitting on the same side of the table doing the happy food dance...(Probably a good thing only three tables were taken!) It was pitiful; we are both sick women..(BTW, Mom is not as big an octo-fan as I am, but after she put away at least 1/2 lb. of fish, and the accompanying spuds, she was last seen wiping up the plate with the accompanying rolls...)

Galleydad had an excellent marinated beef skewer, interspersed with peppers and onion, served medium-well as odered (and people wonder how I grew up not eating meat...) We kept trying to steal his flat Portuguese fries....

Oh, but it's about the octopus....We went at my parents favorite dinner time of 5:00, (don't ask, please...), and we were one of only three parties...I'm worried about what will become of this place..Get there before it's gone!
