Yes, I was intrigued because of the name. (My screen-name has been used as a nickname since college.) But I have no connection to this newish deli I heard about here (favorite sandwiches thread?) or somewhere else online. Went after golf at Encinitas Ranch on Saturday early afternoon.
Not easy for a first-timer to find. Finally located on the east/inland side of El Camino Real, sort of shielded from the street behind a Papa Johns, in a strip mall dominated by a Big Lots. Once I found it there was easy parking. Order at the counter and they'll bring it to your table. Soft drink dispenser, napkins, silverwear to the left. Very pleasant blonde greeting customers, taking orders, and generally running things, though she later said she was just a worker and not a manager.
I had a warm pastrami sandwich on rye, ordered "fatty." I think a full sandwich was $10.95, and came with cole slaw and a pickle wedge. Properly stuffed sandwich, really high in the middle. My rye disintegrated a few bites in -- I asked for a couple more slices and they were provided, gratis. Redistributed the meat and made an extra half-sandwich, with the other half saved for today. Really liked the cole slaw -- ultra-fresh, made in-house. Didn't detect the mayo/creamy sauce until I folded the bottom over the top -- nice crispness, really good. Also loved the pickle spear -- great crunch, good flavor, asked for another and was given two presented on a lettuce leaf.
Look, once I found this place the friendliness and independent entrepreneurship made me a fan. But considering that the behemoth Milton's is the competition in the area, give this place a try. Quicker, a buck or two cheaper, some really fresh prep going on (really impressed by that cole slaw and those pickles), good service -- worth trying.
I'm going to eat my remaining half-sandwich now.
