Moonshadows Last Night

WLA | Dec 17, 2003 09:06 AM

We had to be out in Malibu last night and after concluding the business portion of our evening we drove a short distance down PCH to Moonshadows, (basically about a half mile or so north of Big Rock on the Ocean side of PCH).

They were not very crowded and we got seated by the windows overlooking the water right away. Nice friendly vibe from the hostess and the waiter. It is a little like being on a ship as the restaurant sticks out over the water and they have their flood lights on so you see the ocean rolling up underneath you and the seagulls are flying around and bobbing up and down right in front of you.

Two blood mary's, ordered spicy. They were fine, not the best I have ever tasted and not the worst by a long shot. I would have one again. My biggest gripe was with the starters. My wife's Caesar was okay and I had the lobster salad. Just nothing to make you say, "Boy this is good".

The mains were quite nice. Comfort food in the best sense of the word. I had the braised short ribs, terrific tender and wonderful taste, with rapinni, (sp?) and I substituted mashed potatoes for the gnocchi. I would order this again tomorrow given the chance. My wife had the three mustard chicken, also with mashed potatoes and Chinese long beans. Also very good and beautifully cooked chicken with the moisture content still very high and therefore tender.

I had a glass of very good Cab, (which it should be for $12) and it complimented the short ribs perfectly.

This is a very relaxed, and relaxing place to eat. Tables are nicely spread apart and the chairs are comfy. I noticed on the way in that they had a sign saying that they were going to start serving weekend brunch, which I would be up for trying.
