Went to Meze in scenic Charlestown last nite, and Charlestown is actually quite scenic in spots. The place is as loud as people say, and the blonde wood isn't what I'd pick, but it's a fun place and was almost packed on a Thurs. nite at 8:30. Most of the food was delicious, starting with the bread and wonderful garlic spread w/ olives. We had fancy "martinis" with this, his was an ouzo combination and mine was vodka and white grape juice. Drinks took a while but we'll get to that. We split fried smelts ($10), neither of us had had them before but it was a great choice. Nice and crispy with a little oil and lemon, a bit of salad on the side. I think there was only one entree <$20 but many of them sounded great. I asked the server which he recommended between the halibut and red snapper and he immediately said the latter, so I went with that and it *was* a good choice. Huge piece of fish with a crumb coating in a light shrimp sauce. Came with wilted greens and orzo, pretty good deal for $24. I asked for a Greek white wine and got their version of pinot grigio which was nice and a huge pour, ended up pouring half for my friend. Who got the tenderloin with double baked potato and grilled asparagus. He proclaimed the potato the best he'd ever had but the steak was way over the medium he requested. He probably should have sent it back, it was hard to cut and chew so that was a bummer at $28. Split a dessert that began with D and was chocolate in two phyllo dough things w/ some strawberry sauce and whipped cream. Very good.
But man, what we thought was a good seat in the corner with a nice vantage point kept us totally ignored for the most part. The water/bread guy was pretty good but the actual waiter didn't come to our table for at least 15-20 min, and then there was no "do you want a drink", altho we felt like we better do what we had to do cuz it could be a while before he returned. He didn't ask how things were, late with the dessert menu which we'd grabbed from the water guy. Whatever, it looks like it's a nicer hangout spot for Charlestown in the bar area, I had a good meal and I'd be happier if I hadn't forgotten to put the leftovers in the fridge when I got home.
Finally got to Rice Garden on Wed. and asked if there were veggies in the twice cooked pork which I'd seen mentioned here. She highly recommended it again so I went with the meal that comes with an app. for $7, asked for it spicy. There was good heat but nothing outrageous and it was filled with nice big leeks, bamboo shoots and green peppers. Good chicken wings on the side. Mentioned their popularity on Chowhound which we joked about it. I'll try it again but don't feel the need to go out of my way with the Food Wall much more convenient to me.
